HOPE Volunteer Corp - An Immersive Experience!
We were blessed to go to Gabarone, the capital of Botswana, to volunteer with HOPE worldwide. HOPE Volunteer Corp (HVC) has been difficult to summarize. How do you convey what often turns into such an amazing and transformative experience? A sister on the trip best described it as a fully and unique immersive experience. - Jason, Oakland/Alameda Fellowship Group For more infomation visit:

The 2024 Summer Olympics Starts On Friday!
The Summer Olympic Games, held once every four years, begins this Friday, July 26! The inaugural Olympic Games occurred in 1896 in Athens, Greece, and around 100,000 people attended the opening ceremony. The athletes came from fourteen countries, most of them from Greece, and all were men (except for one woman named Stamata, who was not supposed to compete but ran anyway). Even though Greece had the most athletes, the U.S. finished with the most champions, with eleven placing first in their events. The Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, France, making it the second city after London to host the Summer Olympics three times, and it hasn't been hosted in France in 100 years. For the first time, the opening ceremonies will be outside the main stadium, and the athletes will parade down boats along the Seine River. (In 2028, the Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, California!) Also, for the first time, the Olympic Paris Team proposed adding breakdancing as a sport because it is associated with young people and is both creative and athletic, and it was approved! So now breakdancing is a sport, and for the second time ever, climbing, skateboarding, and surfing will again be included in the competition. Another cool initiative happening for God through the Olympics is sharing the story of Scottish Olympic runner Eric Liddell. A Christian church in the U.K. published a booklet, Running the Race of Your Life, to inspire a new generation of athletes and believers at the Summer Games. They aim to hand out a million copies and are well on their way! The classic movie Chariots of Fire was about Eric Liddell's faith in God and refusal to compromise his beliefs for anyone—even the Olympics. Eric refused to participate in any sporting activity on the Sabbath, including training. He declined to participate when he heard that his 100m event would be on a Sunday. Instead, he entered the 400m event, won gold, and set a new world record in the process! (Maybe it is a good time to watch Chariots of Fire again?) We have disciples participating in and attending the Summer Olympics in Paris. Please pray that God keeps them all safe, that everyone has an exciting and faith-building time at the Summer Olympics, and that everyone has a safe trip back home. |
